Basic Information/ Other Considerations
- Trial Period: 100-night free trial period. Like many other mattress companies, they do require you to keep the product for at least 30 days prior to returning it. This policy is due to an adjustment period in which your body to get adjusted to the mattress. If it ends up needing to be returned, the company tries to donate it to local charities.
- Warranty: 10-year limited warranty
- Shipping: Ships to the USA and Canada via FedEx
- CertiPUR US Certification: In an effort to becoming more eco-friendly, the foams used within the construction of the mattress all meet the CertiPUR-US standards for volatile organic compound emissions, chemical usage, and are within environmentally safe limits for ozone depleters.
- Charity Support: With each sale that is made, a percentage of the proceeds is donated to Good Sports to help children to be able to access sports and activities. To date, the company has helped well over 4 million children.
- Adjustable Base Compatible
- Made in the USA
You will like the Bear Mattress if…
You want a memory foam mattress without the sinking feeling: Below the memory foam lies a response foam. This response foam does a phenomenal job at allowing you to easily move around and switch positions without having to sacrifice the feel of the gel memory foam top layer.
You want to sleep cool at night: The Celliant technology in the cover coupled with the graphite gel is specially designed to keep you cool at night and repel any heat retention.
You live an active lifestyle: There are quite a few studies out there that have displayed the recovery benefits of Celliant (the material that the mattress cover is made out of). Bear is one of the very few companies that incorporate this technology into their mattresses.
You want to give back to Kids: In addition to the company generously donating to every state, they have also donated over $20 million worth of sports equipment and have helped over 4 million kids to be active.
You use an adjustable base: Not all beds are compatible with adjustable bases; however, the Bear is. Its foam constructions allow it to conveniently conform to specific positions that other beds cannot.
You will not like the Bear if…
You prefer innerspring mattresses: With this particular all-foam model, you will not experience the feelings typically associated with a traditional innerspring mattress; however, this mattress does still have some bounce as well as additional comfort layers. Bear also offers a hybrid model which is comprised of springs and pressure reducing foam.
You need old mattress removal: Unfortunately, the company does not currently offer any services to remove your old bed, which is something you need to keep in mind if this is really something you are interested in. On the other hand, if you realize that you no longer want to keep the mattress, they will remove it from your home free of charge.
Construction (Materials & Quality)
Bear is a foam mattress with a layer of memory materials. It can be set on any solid, flat surface and is even compatible with an adjustable base. The company also sells their own foundations that can be found on their website.
The cover of the mattress is one of the most prominent selling points for many consumers, not only because of its appealing two-toned design but also due to the high-quality materials used to create it. The company uses a highly distinct Celliant technology that they allege has FDA-determined infrared yarn technology.
The company claims that this technology has numerous clinically proven benefits to overall wellness and sleep quality, not to mention improved oxygen levels in tissues. They say the Celliant supposedly converts energy from the body into infrared light, essentially providing you with many of these benefits.
If you have any interest in this aspect, I highly encourage you to conduct your own personal research on this topic, as I am not an expert in this field of study. The brand believes that it is especially imperative for those who live active lifestyles, which is something you should really take into consideration if you happen to fit in this category.
The cover is removable and can be gently spot cleaned.
Within the 10-inch thickness of the mattress, there is a gradual transition from the soft to the firm layers from the top down. As opposed to conventional adhesives, Bear uses a water-based bonding solution.
Top Layer: consists of 1 inch of memory foam that is infused with a graphite gel. It’s built with an open cell structure t repels heat away from your body. All of the foams used within the mattress are CertiPUR-US certified. In other words, they primarily avoid particular harmful processes and chemicals that may be found in other brands.
Second Layer: This layer is 1.5 inches worth of a quick response foam that possesses a bounce, aids in alignment, and provides pressure relief.
Third Layer: contains an additional inch of quick response foam that is much more firm than the level above while still possessing those same benefits.
Base Layer: has a supportive level of high-density foam that is 5 inches thick.
Firmness (Support & Feel)
On a 10-point scale with 10 being the firmest, I would describe this model as a 6-6.5 level of firmness. In other words, on a medium range, it ranks on the firmer side, meaning a majority of people should enjoy it.
When you apply weight on the bed and then release it, most of the levels should respond fairly quickly. What makes the mattress a little slower to respond is the inch of memory foam on the top. Although it reacts a little slower, this memory layer responds much quicker than most that are out there.
Regardless of the fact that there is a memory layer, it does not feel predominantly like a memory foam bed would. However, it remains soft and comfortable while you are lying down.
Despite the slow responding top memory layer, there is still a noticeable bounce. Not quite as much as an innerspring model or some of the other all-foam brands I have reviewed, but it is certainly there. You will also notice a nice and gentle cradling effect, where the contouring starts slightly away from the body.
Oftentimes memory foam can make sleepers feel like they are stuck or sinking, but that shouldn’t be the case with this mattress. Most sleepers should be able to move freely on it and with ease. Again, since it is a thinner memory layer and the nature of this product is relatively quick-responding, shifting around should be easier.
This model works great for combination sleepers, or those who spend the night sleeping in different positions, and even people who sleep in just one singular position.
If you are intending on sharing your mattress along with a partner, motion transfer is very lucrative.
Overall, the motion transfer was very minimal. However, due to the cover being stretched tight, you may experience a slight pulling effect horizontally when pushing straight down on the cover.
Despite this minor setback, I feel that light sleepers (a group that needs high isolation) will be bothered in the least bit at night.
If you are planning on sharing a mattress alongside a partner and need to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, then edge support is a feature you are going to want to pay close attention to. Foam mattresses are notorious for struggling to live up to the edge support provided by a traditional innerspring mattress; therefore, I wanted to try out the mattress myself and see how I would feel near the edge of the bed.
As I was lying near the edge of the bed, I experienced an even amount of support from the center all the way to the side. I also felt reassured that I wouldn’t fall out of the bed when switching positions close to the side of the mattress. I also felt a good amount of support when I hung off the bed a tad bit and didn’t see much compression at all in this position.
In the last position, I sat up at the edge of the bed with my feet on the floor. This position was made to simulate either getting into bed at night or putting on my shoes in the morning with the entirety of my weight concentrated on the edge of the mattress. I did notice some compression; however, this is relatively common amongst a vast majority of foam mattresses. Overall, I felt that the Bear mattress has pretty good edge support.
On a scale of 1 to 10, I’d rank the Bear at an amazing 9.3. The mattress not only provided optimal comfort and support, but it also consists of a unique cover with FDA recognized materials.
